Ingredients:

  • Sesame Oil – 1/4 cup
  • Tomato – 2 large (cut into pieces)
  • Tamarind – a small piece  (Optional)
  • Small onion – 6 or Red onion – 2 tbsp
  • Red Chili – 8-10 ( as per your taste)
  • Garlic – 5 cloves
  • Ginger – a small piece ( a cashew nut size)
  • Curry Leaves – 1 string
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tbsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing) – 1 pinch
  • Salt – as required

Steps to Cook:

  • Add tomato, onion, garlic, red chili, ginger, tamarind and salt to taste in a mixer-grinder and grind it to fine coarse paste.
  • Take a pan, add 1/4 cup of sesame oil and allow it to heat on medium flame.
  • Add mustard seeds and when you see it popping, add curry leaves and a pinch of Asafoetida.
  • Then, add the grinded mixture to the hot oil and let it cook under medium heat for 12 minutes. Close the lid, so that it does not splash around.
  • After 10 minutes, you can see the oil oozing out and see a very beautiful texture.
  • Now, the chutney is ready to serve with Idly or Dosa or Adai.
